Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

Most Indians celebrate New Year's Eve the night before Diwali starts (in October), it's the Hindi New Year. Young couples in their 20's do seem to go to parties on 31 December, but the rest say they stay home and get up early for work on 1 January.

I wrote out an invitation by hand (in English) and had one of my friends translate it into Gujarati. I took it to all of our friends and neighbors. Hailey and I started making decorations for our roof top, notice the painted toilet paper rollers in the background. Sloan and his friend Megh filled glasses with pebbles from our junkyard-we added the extra candles from Hanukkah to make hurricanes. Someone brought a stereo and extension cord, others brought great food. I cut carrots and popped popcorn. Being a dry state there was no alcohol, which we desperately needed. We had liquor permits but didn't know until today that they had expired. Bad timing. We could have used a few.

At midnight fireworks lit up the Baroda sky (someone else was celebrating), we opened crackers, or poppers, and covered the roof in confetti and tinsel-quite fun. Sloan wasn't feeling well, he headed down to the apartment around 11. Hailey felt bad that he missed the confetti so she came down with handfulls of it. Sloan slept through as Hailey covered him and his bed in the colorful stuff.

I have been very fortunate this past year.

May the coming year bring health, happiness and love to you all.
